On October 19, 2019, the Third National United Nations Knowledge Competition for College Students, co-hosted by the United Nations Association of China (UNA-China) and Beijing International Studies University (BISU), was held in Beijing. Ms. Zhang Dan, Vice-President and Director-General of UNA-China, Ms. Smriti Aryal, Head of the Office for UN Women China, and Mr. Zhang Yan, Vice President of BISU, addressed the Opening Ceremony. Ms. Wang Ying, Deputy Director-General of UNA-China, Mr. Jia Lieying, Professor of Beijing Language and Culture University, and Ms. He Lan, Professor of Communication University of China served as the judges. During the competition, the National Universities¡¯ Seminar on UN Teaching was also held.

Ms. Zhang Dan pointed out that in the present situation, China would continue to firmly support multilateralism and the international system built around the UN, and make important contributions to maintaining the international peace and development and working toward a community with a shared future for mankind. The UNA-China is committed to the research and promotion of the UN Charter and is willing to set up a platform for the Chinese youth to broaden their global vision and build their capacity to participate in international affairs. Ms. Smriti Aryal said that China is an important force supporting the UN and the multilateralism. The Competition is conducive to helping Chinese students to enhance their understanding of the UN and foster a spirit of cooperation, which will benefit China¡¯s in-depth participation in global governance. Mr. Zhang Yan said that, with the support of the UNA-China, the BISU has made progress in enriching the concepts of training talents for international organizations and putting them into practice. The BISU wishes to strengthen mutual learning and exchanges with other universities.

More than 60 contestants from 20 universities and colleges across the country participated in the competition. In addition to the traditional questions, an impromptu speech session was set up in the final this year. Contestants played the roles as different countries¡¯ spokespersons and UN officials, and made comments on the UN issues. In the simulation session, contestants representing relevant member states simulated to discuss issues in the UN Security Council.

After intense competition, Shandong University, China University of Political Science and Law, Sichuan International Studies University came top. A contestant from Zhejiang University won the Best Style Award. China Foreign Affairs University and Anhui Normal University won the Best Organization Award.
