From August 27 to 28, the 2018 Trilateral Presidents Meeting of UNA-ROK, UNA-China and UNA-Japan was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The meeting was chaired by UNA-ROK. More than 10 participants attended the Meeting, including Amb. Wang Xuexian, Board Member of UNA-China, Ms. Wang Ying, Deputy Director-General of UNA-China, Amb. Sun Joun-yung, Honorary President of UNA-ROK, Prof. Park Heung-soon, Vice-President of UNA-ROK, Dr. Sen Genshitsu, President of UNA-Japan, Amb. Akashi Yasushi, Vice-President of UNA-Japan, Amb. Park Soo Gil, President of WFUNA and Amb. Cho Chang-Beom, Vice-President of WFUNA. Participants exchanged views on challenges to global governance, the UN’s role and environmental problem in East Asia.

 

Participants agreed that the multilateralism is undermined by unilateralism and protectionism. The international community should uphold the leading role of the UN, safeguard the rules-based international order and the WTO-centered multilateral trade system. China, Japan and the Republic of Korea should further strengthen cooperation on environmental issues and jointly build a beautiful and clean East Asia.

 

From August 28 to 31, 70 university students from China, Japan and the Republic of Korea attended the 9th ROK-China-Japan Youth Forum. The Youth Forum is composed of Model United Nations, Symposium and Cultural Events. Students from the three countries discussed issues on Prevention of Terrorism and Violent Extremism, Human Rights Mainstreaming, Gender Equality and Climate Change etc. The Forum enhanced mutual understanding and exchanges of the young people of the three countries.

 

Since 2010, the Trilateral Meeting and the Youth Forum have been held in China, Japan and the Republic of Korea in rotation. UNA-China hosted the 2011, 2014 and 2017 Trilateral Meeting in Chengdu, Xi’an and Beijing respectively. Sichuan University, Northwestern Polytechnical University and Beijing Foreign Studies University organized the 2nd, 5th and 8th Youth Forum respectively. The 2019 Trilateral Presidents Meeting and the 10th Japan-China-ROK Youth Forum will be held in Tokyo, Japan.
