Xi Jinping Meets with UN Secretary-General Ant¨®nio Guterres
On April 8, 2018, President Xi Jinping met with Secretary-General Ant¨®nio Guterres of the United Nations(UN)at the Great Hall of the People.
Xi Jinping welcomed the visit of Ant¨®nio Guterres to China and his attendance at the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2018. Xi Jinping pointed out that the international situation has seen new developments and changes in recent years. While there are various problems in the world, they all come down to the issue of governance systems and governance capabilities. We need to continuously promote and improve global governance to well respond to this challenge. China has been making coordinated efforts to pursue the five-sphere integrated plan in economy, politics, culture, society and ecological civilization. These five aspects are also the main parts of building a community with a shared future for mankind. The development we are pursuing should be of high-quality and the measurement standard is people-centered. People's sense of gain should be the goal of domestic governance and global governance, and we should continue to provide confidence and stable expectations for the people. The impetus for advancement must be sought in reform and tapped from innovation. Reform, opening up and innovation are key words of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the just-concluded Two Sessions of China. Everything we do is to seek happiness for the people, rejuvenate the nation, and seek common development for the world. China's proposal and promotion of the "Belt and Road" initiative also aims at pursuing the alignment of development strategies of various countries to form a momentum of common development and increase confidence in a better future.
Xi Jinping stressed that it is a basic policy of China's diplomacy to support the UN in playing the role and safeguarding its authority and status. We advocate that all countries, big or small, are equal, and also believe that major countries should shoulder their due responsibilities. The essence of multilateralism is to seek consultation and cooperation among all countries, which puts cooperation among major countries in the first place. China has always been a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of the international order. We are willing to share China's development opportunities and experience with the world without imposing our own road, models, and theories on any country.
Ant¨®nio Guterres once again extended his congratulations to Xi Jinping on his election as Chinese President and commended its historic significance for China. Ant¨®nio Guterres said that he was very pleased to visit China on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening up and to attend the BFA Annual Conference. He believed that China will exert greater influence in international affairs in the coming decades. The world today faces many peace and development issues that need to be resolved through global cooperation and enhancement of the roles of multilateral institutions. He thanked China for its long-term support for the cause of the UN and its significant role in multilateral institutions. China has become the most important pillar for multilateralism and an indispensable, trustworthy and important force for promoting world peace and development. The cooperation between the UN and China is of great significance for the world. He agreed with President Xi Jinping's proposal of building a community with a shared future for mankind, and supported China's important initiatives including the "Belt and Road" cooperation which aim to realize common prosperity for all countries. It is believed that these initiatives will bring the best interest for the international community.
