2018 World Heritage Canal Towns Cooperation Conference Held in Yangzhou
On May 16, 2018, the United Nations Association of China (UNA-China) and the Jiangsu Joint Office for the Construction of the Cultural Belt of the Grand Canal, the Yangzhou Municipal Government and the World Historical and Cultural Canal Cities Cooperation Organization jointly hosted the World Heritage Canal Towns Cooperation Conference 2018 in Yangzhou.
Over 300 participants from more than 70 world heritage canal towns, UN agencies and relevant institutions attended the Conference, including President LU Shumin of UNA-China and Ms. Marielza Oliveira from UNESCO Beijing Office. Ms. ZHANG Dan, Vice President and Director General of UNA-China chaired some panel meetings.
The theme of the Conference is Sustainable Development of the World Heritage Canal Towns. The delegates believed that protection, inheritance, and utilization of the world heritage canal towns should be promoted from the perspective of sustainable development, especially in areas such as sustainable urbanization, sustainable industrialization, infrastructure, tourism, and environmental protection. The development of the World Heritage Canal towns is also an important part of the global effort to implement the 2030 Agenda , which requires the joint efforts of international organizations, governments at all levels and civil society at large.
