The 70th Anniversary of the United Nations “The Seventy Years of UN: Mission, Responsibility and Future” was held in Beijing

On July 20^th 2015, an International Seminar with the overarching theme “The Seventy Years of UN: Mission, Responsibility and Future” , co-hosted by the United Nations of Association of China (UNA-China) and the Chinese People's Instituteof Foreign Affairs (CPIFA), was held at DiaoyutaiState Guesthouse in Beijing, to commemorate the 70^th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and of the victory of anti-fascist war. H.E. Mr. Li Baodong, Vice Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Mr. Ali Hassan Mwinyi, Former President of the United Republic of Tanzania,Kim Won-soo, UN Under-Secretary General and The Acting High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, and Ambassador Lu Shumin, President of UNA-China addressed the opening ceremony. Yang Wenchang, President of CPIFA , Tayé-Brook Zerihoun , Assistant Secretary-General of UN and other distinguished guests also attended the opening ceremony, presided by Mr. Liu Zhixian，Vice-President and Director-General of UNA-China.Over 150 participants from UN, diplomatic communities, academic circles, civil society, and media attended the seminar and held in-depth discussions around three topics: The UN in Maintaining International Order: Roles and Challenges; Global Governance and the UN; Maintaining Peace and Promoting Development in the New Era: Effective Ways.?

Participants commended the tremendous achievements of UN in its role of maintaining world peace and security, promoting economic and social development, and protecting human rights, while they also believed that UN would continue to face many challenges in the maintenance of just and equitable international order, and the promotion of global governance. Participants asserted that in coping with new challenges and tasks, the purposes and principles of the UN Charter should be upheld, the UN’s centre role should be respected, multilateralism should be adhered to, and consultation and cooperation should be observed. Participants thanked the UNA-China and CPIFA for hosting this Seminar. They acknowledged that the seminar was held in time and was of great relevance, which would contribute to the UN’s efforts in learning lessons from the past and seeking solutions for the future.
