Vice-President Zhang Dan Met with the Delegation of UNA-South Sudan
On July 25, Ms. Zhang Dan, Vice-President and Director-General of UNA-China, met with Mr. Joseph Kenyi, President of UNA-South Sudan, Mr. Salah Lumumba, Program Coordinator of UNA-South Sudan, and Mr. Philip Akweyi, Member of UNA-South Sudan. Ms. Zhang briefed the guests on the work of UNA-China, and the two sides exchanged views on the issues of domestic situation of South Sudan, China¡¯s UN peacekeeping operations in South Sudan and cooperation between UNA-China and UNA-South Sudan. Ms. Zhang pointed out that as one of the five permanent members of the Security Council, China actively takes part in UN peacekeeping operations and dispatches over 1000 peacekeepers to South Sudan, which hosts the biggest number of Chinese peacekeepers and the first Chinese infantry battalion. China¡¯s actions demonstrate not only fulfillment of international obligations but also support for South Sudan peace process. Political dialogue is the only way to achieve peace and prosperity. It is the sincere wish of Chinese people that South Sudan could resume peace and stability in the near future.
Mr. Kenyi briefed on the activities of UNA-South Sudan, and shared his views on South Sudan peace process and UN peacekeeping operations. He pointed out that the conflicts in South Sudan are the result of confrontation among three political parties. UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) effectively maintains peace and stability there and protects civilians. China plays an important role in South Sudan peace process by helping with capacity building and improvement of local infrastructure. Chinese peacekeepers in South Sudan are well-trained and highly disciplined. They carry out humanitarian assistance and build roads and bridges, which win them good reputation.
