?

On August 28£¬Ms. Zhang Xiao¡¯an, Vice-President & Director-General of UNA-China met with Mr. Xu Haoliang, UN Assistant Secretary General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific. Ms. Liu Hua, Deputy Director-General of UNA-China, and Mr. Christophe Bahuet, Country Director of UNDP China were also present.

Ms. Zhang congratulated Mr. Xu on his election as UN Assistant Secretary General, and briefly introduced the work of UNA-China in research, promotion of and participation in UN activities with emphasis on the National Consultation Project on the UN Post-2015 International Development Agenda co-hosted by UNA-China and UNDP China, the Model UN to be held in November 2013 and the International Civil Servants Capacity Building Training Course. In this content, Ms. Zhang invited Mr. Xu to give lectures to the future classes of the International Civil Servants Capacity Building Training Course, and asked for his assistance in facilitating the outstanding Chinese students recommended by UNA-China for the internship of UN.

Mr. Xu expressed his sincere gratitude to the Chinese Government, especially the Chinese Permanent Mission to UN, for supporting his running for the post of UN Assistant Secretary General. He also commended UNA-China¡¯s activities, such as the Model UN and the International Civil Servants Capacity Building Training Course for the public, the youth in particular. He emphasized, with the rising role and status of China in international affairs, the relationship and cooperation between China and UN were getting closer and going further, but in contrast, China is severely under-represented in UN with the limited number and low ranking of the Chinese officers in UN. In his opinion, China should learn from Japan and the Republic of Korea to send more young people to work in UN. Mr. Xu stressed, with China¡¯s future development, the relationship between UN and China were no longer that between the donors and recipients, UN was more willing to enhance the bilateral substantial cooperation in the areas of poverty alleviation, environment, education, urbanization etc, by providing its soft knowledge in expertise, management, neutrality and network, with aim to promote China¡¯s sustainable and equitable development. He expressed his willingness to support the activities of UNA-China by promising to share his UN experience with the classes of the training course and to facilitate the Chinese students recommended by UNA-China for their internships of UN.
