The United Nations Association of China (UNA-China) delegation led by Ambassador Lu Shumin, President of UNA-China, visited Australia from 15th to 19th April, at the invitation of the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC). Vice-President and Director-General of UNA-China Zhang Xiaoan, 2 other UNA-China staff and 2 representatives from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies joined the delegation. The delegation visited 9 governmental and non-governmental organizations in Australia, and had dialogue with Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australian Agency for International Development, and AHRC respectively. Both parties have exchanged views on China-Australia Human Rights Dialogue and China-Australia Human Rights Technical Cooperation Program. The delegation introduced the implementation of cooperation program on human rights education between UNA-China and AHRC in the past 9 years, including the National Model United Nations Conferences, Human Rights Knowledge Training Courses and the Human Rights Knowledge Competition. The faculty and student representatives from the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies shared their personal experiences in participating in the Model UN Conferences to show the significance of this program in raising their human rights awareness. The AHRC officials expressed their appreciations and satisfactory with the positive results of the program. The delegation also visited and had meeting with the Australian Attorney General's Department, the United Nations Association of Australia, the University of New South Wales, the White Ribbon Foundation, Edmund Rice Centre and the Tranby Indigenous Colleges to know their work in the promotion and protection of human rights. During these meetings, a variety of topics were touched upon, including Australian human rights protection legal framework, the National Human Rights Action Plan, human rights education, violence against women and the rights of the indigenous people. The UNA-China delegation introduced to the Australian side the Constitution of the People's Republic of China, the human rights legal framework in China, the National Human Rights Action Plan, Model United Nations activities, and China's progress in the fields of prevention and elimination of violence against women, community human rights education and protection of the rights of the ethnic minorities.

Both sides agreed that this visit enhanced the friendship and bilateral understandings on human rights concepts and human rights education, and demonstrated the principle of equality and mutual respect. This visit has further contributed to the new round of cooperation program and the exploration of new areas of bilateral cooperation. The UNA-China delegation expressed its willingness to share the good experiences and practices learned from this visit with the Chinese society through different channels, and apply them to the following cooperation program, such as Model UN activities and Human Rights Knowledge Training Courses.?
