Side Event On "Promotion and Protection of the Right to Development" Held in Geneva

On June 18, United Nations Association of China (UNA-China) and the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations at Geneva co-hosted a side-event of the 59th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council entitled ¡°Promotion and Protection of the Right to Development¡± at Palais des Nations. Minister Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations at Geneva Ms. Shi Qi, Executive Director of Universal Rights Group Mr. Marc Limon, Former Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Amb. Ren Yisheng, Senior Research Fellow of the Shanghai Institute for International Studies Ms. Li Xin, Consultant of the International Association for Human Rights and Social Development Mr. David Lopez, Champion in women¡¯s individual epee at the Paris Olympic Games Ms. Kong Man Wai Vivian, and Associate Research Fellow of Center for International Knowledge on Development Ms. Hua Ruoyun delivered keynote speeches. Representatives from the diplomatic corps in Geneva, UN organizations, and civil society organizations participated in the meeting.

Panelists stressed that unilateralism and protectionism have imposed a serious impact on the economies of developing countries. Countries should uphold true multilateralism, place the development at the core of the global agenda, and advance the full realization of the right to development.
